Sri Lanka

On December 26, 2004, a natural disaster lashed the Indic Ocean. A Tsunami, put an end to the lives of thousands of people in the coasts of Sri Lanka and other countries in this territory. Because of its devastating impact, it caused not only physical and economic damages but also psychological.

However, trying to offer a better solution than offering rescue packages, Krik Jobsz aimed his efforts to help those who he considered more strongly affected: merchants and fishermen, who lost approximately 80% of their fleet. Having this in mind, he gathered a group of diving professionals in Madiha.

This is how Paavima.org and Consejo Terrícola A.C. were born. A project that is based on the principle of the Chinese proverb: "Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for the rest of his life.” Through the Paavima project, consciousness of conserving a healthy environment was promoted. People realized that their activities were not sustainable and were harming the coral reefs, the beaches, and the marine environment. The need for new equipment and instructions for its correct use by divers was deemed in order to improve the reef’s health. This was achieved through the construction of the “Shack.”

While in Madiha, it was noticed that its inhabitants had no ties with the sea which was formerly taken as a good supplier but now was feared. Their bonds with the sea were strengthened through a ceremony for the victims of the Tsunami. The “Memorial” was created.
